SimpleMind Pro for Mac can import several file formats.

How to import

Select from the main menu “Mind Map” – “Import” and locate the file. This creates a .smmx mind map in the same folder that is open in the Mind Map Explorer.

What files can SimpleMind import

  • Native SimpleMind mind maps (.smmx)
  • Text files (.txt)
This is an easy way to convert your text files into mind maps. Each new line in the text file creates a new topic, leading tabs are interpreted as hierarchy level.
Alternatively, paste any copied text as a list. Use “Edit” – “Paste” – “Paste text as list”.
  • FreeMind (.mm) and .opml files.
The file is imported as a new local mind map. SimpleMind imports the basic structure of an .mm or .opml file. SimpleMind extracts text, notes and hierarchy from and ignores all other attributes such as links and icons. Because of this, you should only use this as a one-time import.
  • Import the table of contents of a .pdf as bookmarks
This creates a new topic for each bookmark with a link back to that page in the .pdf. This requires an official Table of Contents in the .pdf.
Because of Sandboxing, the AppStore edition cannot link to a .pdf on your own Mac.
To import as a cloud mind map, store the .pdf on Dropbox or Google Drive. Find the document in SimpleMind’s Mind Map Explorer. Right click and click import.
